Shyness. The book's about shyness. Someone who is shy and instead of overcoming it, becomes misanthropic and deflects his shortcomings onto other people, and gives up, leaves. He's confused. The reader isn't supposed to think the island man is right. It's not an attempt to convince them, I don't think, not deep down.
